McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery presents “John Meade: It’s Personal!” from December 2, 2023, to March 17, 2024, from 10 am to 5 pm. This exhibition showcases John Meade’s unique artistic vision through sculpture, video, and installation, exploring the metaphysical and surreal aspects of contemporary life. Meade’s work is known for its adventurous materiality, sensuous forms, and unexpected juxtapositions that evoke the erotic and uncanny.
Curated to highlight personal themes in Meade’s work, including queer culture, politics, and artistic experimentation, “It’s Personal!” delves into the psychological and societal influences that shape his art. The title references the idea that personal subjectivity informs Meade’s sculptures and pays homage to the concept of the personal being political, as outlined in Carol Hanisch’s 1970 essay. The exhibition features new abstract works alongside key sculptures from Meade’s three-decade-long career, displayed across expansive gallery spaces and outdoors at McClelland. Concurrently, Meade’s public sculpture “Love Flower” (2019) will be installed at McClelland as part of the Southern Way McClelland Commissions.
